5 Summer Skin Care Remedies

5-skin-care-tips-summer

For most of us, Summer is the best time of the year! We lose our routine and await for those long bright evenings to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. However, it is also that time of the year to ensure we take extra precautions to protect and nourish our skin from the sun’s harmful rays and environmental elements. Plainly said, our skin takes a beating in these blissful months.  So we thought we would share these 5 at home skin care remedies to help protect that gorgeous face of yours.

  1. Sunscreen

Protecting your face, drinking plenty of water (and perhaps even splashing some on your face to remove the dirt throughout the day) and leading a healthy lifestyle will all aid in keeping your wrinkles at bayI think what comes to mind first is the obvious…sunscreen! As part of your morning routine, apply a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen that protects your skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays.

  2. Cleanse your face

Cleanse your face morning and night by using a little bit of honey and yogurt. Equal amounts applied to your face and left on for approximately 10 minutes will leave your skin feeling smooth and very clean.

  3. Exfoliate

Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week by using a mixture of baking soda, olive (or coconut oil) and honey. Why? Because the baking soda will remove the dead skin cells and balance the PH levels. It also is very soothing and will decrease any inflammation present. Here’s a little recipe you can try: combine 1 teaspoon of baking soda and olive oil and ½ teaspoon of honey. Mix together and apply to your damp face for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water, pat dry and apply your moisturizer as usual. Or you can use a mixture of equal amounts of lemon juice and sugar…rub in circular motions and rinse off.

  4. Moisturize

You can use extra virgin Coconut oil and apply a small layer on your face at night (coconut oil provides essential fatty acids) to give you glowing skin in the morning. Just rub into the palm of your hands to warm up and apply it sparingly. Or, you may want to use some fresh Aloe Vera from the Aloe Vera plant. The Aloe plant contains hormones that reduce skin inflammation…perfect to have on hand for those sunburns. Aloe is excellent for hydration but did you know that you can also freeze the juice into small ice cube trays? Just use when needed!

  5. Mask

Mask, using bananas. Yes…bananas! Bananas contain potassium, Vitamins C and E and are responsible for promoting clear glowing skin. Mash a ripe banana, add some milk or an egg white and mix thoroughly. Apply it evenly to your face and leave on for about 20 minutes then wash it off with tepid water and moisturize. Who knew bananas have multiple uses!?

10-Supplies-Puppy-Training

Oh puppies…we all love them! Puppies and Babies. Babies and puppies. But, let’s talk about puppies. The fun. The frustration. The worry. The reward. The stuff…oh the stuff! Where do you start? What do you need? It can be over-whelming! We have compiled a list to ensure your puppy has everything they need and of course, everything you need, to make your life easier while training your new best friend. A simple Top 10 supply list for puppies and their leaders. Where’s the easy button?!

Identification Tag

An identification tag is number one on our list, without exception. Maybe your pooch is already tattooed and licensed by the City but they probably still need a name tag with their name on it, your name and phone number to call in case they get lost. You can pick out your favourite design and customize a name tag at your community pet store.

Collar

Next up is a collar to attach their name tag. You may need a collar for everyday use and a harness for walking. Purchase a harness that will give your pooch the support it needs and won’t cause any stress or harm while walking. Keep in mind that your puppy will grow, so you will probably have to purchase another collar/harness in about six months.

Leash

There seems to be a pattern here because next up, is a leash for the harness. You can purchase a leash that extends with the push of a button, (which should only be used in low public areas) or you can opt for one that is about 5- 6 feet in length and easier to handle. Remember, while training your new puppy it is recommended to have them walk slightly behind your hip, which needs a short leash. This means you are the boss. The leader of the pack. Talk to your friends at your local pet store for more information.

Puppy Pee Pads

These are always a good choice, especially if you live in a condo or townhome. Put your pad by the front or back door (whatever door you normally take your dog out) and keep it there for the day. This will teach your dog to go to that door whenever they must go and keep your floors and carpeted areas “mess free”. Eventually the pee pad will be placed outside the door to encourage your dog to go outside.

Cleaning Supplies

Speaking of puppy accidents, make sure you have plenty of paper towel and a specific pet cleaner ready. Yes, just like a baby, your new fur baby will have surely have accidents. A pet cleaner that contains the proper enyzmes to attack the urine, is ideal. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and will go in the same place time after time, so ensure your clean the soiled area properly to eliminate bad habits. And remember not to scold or cause any harm to your pup when cleaning it up. Simply take them outside immediately.

Bowls

Food Bowls. Well… this is simple right?! It is if you purchase bowls that have “non-skid” bottoms and ones appropriate to your dog’s size. Food and water should be put down twice a day in the same area and removed immediately following their dis-interest in eating or drinking. This allows you to know when to take them out for a bathroom break (typically within an hour of drinking) and trains your pup to eat and drink on command. Remember to wash their bowls after each use.

Dog Treats

Good behavior deserves a treat. And, it’s imperative you give a small treat when training your puppy. However, not all treats are created equal. Read the labels, know what you are feeding your dog and the caloric intake. Give a treat to your dog after: they go to the back door (or outside) to go to the bathroom, sit on command or respond to any of your training commands. This teaches your dog good behavior. Always reward good behavior with treats. And chew toys…get some chew toys for sure!

Puppy Training Classes

If you are not sure where to begin training your pup and need some skills, then sign up for a class. Ensure the rest of the family follows through with the commands as well. Consistent commands/rewards are essential for teaching your dog good behaviour.

Dog Food

Dry food versus wet food. There are so many choices out there and they all vary in cost. Your puppy is growing and needs healthy food to receive proper vitamins and minerals, so choosing the right dog food is an important one! Talk to your Veterinarian, your local pet food store and do your research. The quantity of their food is just as important as the quality…remember not to over-feed your dog and stick to a regular feeding schedule.

Puppy Crate

Crating your dog will teach them to relax and sleep while inside, as most dogs will not go to the bathroom where they sleep. It also provides a secure environment and teaches your pup when it’s time to play! Create good habits…when you open the door, take them outside to relieve themselves and then reward their good behavior with a treat and then it’s play time! Traveling in a car with a crate will provide the security, re-assurance and safety both you and your pet needs.

Stacey-Contest-Winner

When Stacey Green checked her voicemail at work on January 8th, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. It was a message from Dollars & Cents owner Salim Dhanani telling her she had won the grand prize of $1,000 cash in the store’s recent holiday contest.

“I was in shock!” Stacey said. “I’ve never won anything like this before, I was actually trembling a bit!”.

Back in December Stacey noticed the posters and draw box in store while shopping at Dollars & Cents Willowbrook Langley location. “I went to the Facebook page  right there in the store and then filled out the ballot,” said Stacey. Her family and two dogs just moved to the Clayton Heights area in August and her daughter will be starting kindergarten this September. Stacey works as a Senior Learning Facilitator at Rogers Communications.

“I’m so thankful to Dollars & Cents! I love the store, there are so many cool things in there. My favourite aisles especially are the giftware, kitchen and toy aisles. So much cool, unique stuff at a great price!” said Stacey.

The extra cash couldn’t of come at a better time. “We discovered black mould under our countertops just last week. It seems there was a leak under the faucet that we didn’t know about. It was past the point of saving the countertops so we required a full replacement which we couldn’t really afford right now. So this money will replace our countertops!” said Stacey.

The winning didn’t stop with Stacey. 3 incredible runner up prizes were awarded to local shoppers as well:

1st Runner up – Opal Spa $300 Package: Sacha Mayhew Davenport
2nd Runner up – Parlour Day Spa $250 Package: Kelly Clayton
3rd Runner up – Vancouver Giants family of 4 tickets package: Hermine Janzen Hill

5-diy-thanksgiving-ideas

Fall is quite possibly our favourite season here at Dollars & Cents! The trees are rich with autumn colours, scarves and boots are out of the closet, and there’s always a great excuse to cozy up on a cold fall night with family and loved ones at home. Hosting a thanksgiving dinner this weekend? Any good host knows decor is an important piece to the thanksgiving experience. Adding a bit of fall flare to your home doesn’t have to break the bank if you’re willing to get a bit creative. Here are 5 easy do-it-yourself ideas we’ve come up with that are simple and affordable. Most of these craft supplies you can find right here in store.

Glitter Pumpkins

Hate carving pumpkins? What about bedazzling them with your favourite glitter? Cover a mini pumpkin with clear ahesive, and dust in sparkles of various fall colours. For a bigger impact, try using a larger pumpkin or a metallic spray paint such as gold or silver to really add a “wow” factor.

Thankful Jar

A great way to remind everyone the purpose of this holiday is creating a “thankful jar”. Each person in the family writes down things they are thankful for on a note to be placed in the jar. Read them at the dinner table or save them for special occasions in future. To create, decorate an old mason jar with craft paper or your favourite creative pen.

Marquee Letters

These are all rage right now. Piece together a few marquee letters throughout the home or on you mantle. Choose simple words like “fall” or “thanks” that will be easy to display in various areas. Or choose the letter of your family’s last name to enjoy as decor all year round.

Mason Jar Flowers

Pick up some of your favourite fall coloured flowers to separte into various mason jars throughout the house. Try adding burlap or lace aroun the mason jar to add a bit more texture to the jar. These are perfect for thanksgiving dinner tables.

Mini Pumpkin Place Cards

Jazz up your thanksgiving dinner with mini-pumpkin place cards. Slice a small incision into the stem and simply insert your cardstock pieces in place. You can use painted pumpkins or an assortment of pumpkin colours for a more rustic look.
