christmas tree decorating ideas

Every year, we look forward to decorating the Christmas tree with family and friends. The tree becomes our holiday décor centerpiece and the hub of present-opening activity on the big day. Yet, we often get stuck in a decorating rut and if we look back at photos from years past, our trees tend to look very similar. So, let’s shake things up with these Christmas tree decorating ideas!

Change Your Topper

The star or the angel? For as long as we can remember, it seems there’ve only been two choices for a Christmas tree topper. However, other options do exist. For example, a snowflake topper would look fantastic on a tree with spray-on snow. Or if you love Santa, topping the tree with jolly old Saint Nick or just his hat adds a fun and whimsical touch. Other less conventional tree toppers include everything from crowns to poinsettias.

Make a Statement with Metallics

Move over red and green; trendy metallics have arrived. However, this year, muted, rather than bright and shiny, describes 2019’s silver and gold. Aged or vintage metallic ornaments with a patina will make your décor seem warmer. You can also pair them with one bold colour, like a dark blue or purple, for a stronger statement.

Go Handmade

Many people don’t think they have time to make their own Christmas ornaments. Others worry about buying expensive crafting supplies. Yet, making ornaments can be as simple as gathering pinecones from your yard or a park and attaching some string and tiny pom poms with a hot glue gun. Check out this easy tutorial.

Kids love craft projects too and this mini yarn hat ornament is just one of many excellent online DIYs. Also, to complete this project, kids only need toilet paper rolls, scissors, tissue paper, and yarn.

Establish a Theme

To give your tree a more cohesive look, begin by establishing a theme. Do you love nature? Then, only include bird, animal, and flower ornaments on your tree. For pet-free homes, a Christmas tree with edible ornaments may be a fun alternative. Think candy canes, gingerbread people, cinnamon sticks, and a popcorn garland. Take a look at these Christmas tree decorating themes for more inspiration.

Classic Thanksgiving Menu

Every Thanksgiving, we celebrate the fall harvest with our family and friends. As we gather together, the tantalizing scent of turkey and stuffing wafts through the air, whetting our appetite for the feast to follow. We all have our favourite dishes and the cooks in our family have their tried and true recipes. Yet, a new twist or two on the classic Thanksgiving menu may make for a delectable surprise this year. So, check out these recipes and get some new ideas for reinventing your Thanksgiving classics.

1. Red Wine Cranberry Sauce

Let’s face it: nothing quite says Canadian Thanksgiving like that can-shaped cranberry sauce. However, if you’d like to make something fresh and aromatic this year, you’ve got to try this red wine cranberry sauce recipe. Pick up some dry red wine or port, a cinnamon stick, orange, and, of course, cranberries and sugar, and make some Thanksgiving magic happen.

2. Ultimate Brussels Sprouts

So, Brussels sprouts aren’t everyone’s go-to side dish. Therefore, we really need to do something special to make them a favourite part of the classic Thanksgiving menu. How about adding some super-Canadian ingredients like bacon, beer, and maple syrup? Yes, this easy-to-follow recipe will result in really good eating.

3. Sweet Potato, Spring Onion, and Feta Salad

Sweet potatoes with marshmallows evokes some serious Thanksgiving memories. However, it is one really sweet side dish. With so many of us watching our sugar intake, why not try this savory alternative: sweet potato salad? You’ll still be roasting sweet potatoes in the oven, but then you’ll be able to let them cool. Add some feta, pine nuts, and dressing ingredients and it’ll be time to dig in.

4. Apple, Cranberry, and Pecan Stuffing

Without stuffing, Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving. The question is: could grandma’s classic stuffing be a bit more exciting? This apple, cranberry, and pecan stuffing recipe might be worth a try if you’re looking to take it to the next level of deliciousness. Pick up all the fabulous fruit, veggies, herbs, and more at the grocery store and give it a go!

5. Jamaican Jerk Roast Turkey

The Thanksgiving dinner centerpiece has to be the turkey. It’s a tradition that we don’t want to do away with. Yet, it may be time to spice things up a bit, literally. For those who like Scotch bonnet or habanero chilies, this Jamaican jerk roast turkey recipe delivers on spice. And if you really love it, make some extra seasoning and try it on your other favourite meats, fish, and veggies throughout the year.

5 Easy Summer Grilling Recipes

In Canada, warm summer weather means it’s time to break out the grill. However, barbequing is popular worldwide. From Korean bulgogi to Turkish kebabs, it’s possible to find grilled food almost anywhere you go. You don’t need to leave home to taste some exotic barbeque, though. Give these five easy summer grilling recipes a try and go on your own culinary adventure.

1. Hawaiian Chicken Kebabs

Get a taste of the tropics at home with this Hawaiian chicken kebabs recipe. You’ll need a few basic ingredients for the marinade and skewers, but it is critical to choose fresh pineapple over canned. Chunks of the latter are too small to fit on skewers, and the flavour of fresh grilled pineapple is undeniably better. Also, if you are using wooden skewers, be sure to soak them in water for at least an hour, otherwise they may burn on the grill.

2. Mexican Grilled Shrimp Tostadas

Let’s jet off to another exotic location and say, “Hola!” to some Mexican grilled shrimp tostadas. This recipe shows you how to make your own guacamole, as well as the tostada. However, you can buy guacamole and ingredients like salsa verde. On the other hand, if you would like to give this salsa verde recipe a try, pick up some tomatillos and serrano chiles and go for it!

3. Grilled Skirt Steak Gyros

It’s time to visit the Mediterranean, starting in Greece. “Gyros” is a Greek sandwich that you’ll find in tavernas across the country. It can be made with beef, pork, lamb, or a combination of those meats. In this recipe, grilled skirt steak is used. You’ll also be adding some Mediterranean herbs like mint, oregano, and garlic.

4. Grilled Veggie Pizza

A staple of Italian cuisine is pizza, but you don’t need a traditional wood oven to prepare it. If you’re looking for a vegetarian option for the barbeque, you won’t go wrong with this grilled veggie pizza recipe. You will need to buy a prebaked 12-inch thin whole wheat pizza crust to prepare this dish quickly and easily, though.

5. Grilled Polish Sausage

Our last recipe is grilled polish sausage with sauerkraut. These delicious sausages are made even more flavourful as beer and onions are added. And, if it begins to rain and grilling doesn’t seem possible, don’t worry. Grab a casserole dish and stick all the ingredients in the oven for 90 minutes.

5 DIY Father's Day Gifts

This June 16th is Father’s Day. It’s also the perfect opportunity to show our dads, partners, and all the great guys in our lives how much they mean to us. This year, you and even your kids can make the best presents for dad. Select one or more of these 5 DIY Father’s Day gifts and get creative!

  1. Pre-shave oil: This pre-shave oil is easy to make, and that special man in your life is sure to appreciate the great scent it imparts and the soft skin he gets after using it. All you need is a glass bottle, some grapeseed oil, olive oil, and an essential oil. Two nice scents for men are cedarwood and sandalwood. Cedarwood is suitable for someone with oily skin, whereas sandalwood works for both dry and oily skin.
  1. Dry rubs: If dad loves to barbecue, a basket full of homemade dry rubs and perhaps a gift card to a local butcher would be a delectable treat indeed. Prepare these dry rub recipes for everything from burgers to seafood and store them in spice jars or mason jars with shaker lids.
  1. Father’s Day keychain: Here’s a gift that’s simple enough for the kids to create: a Father’s Day keychain. You’ll only need three items for this project: some alphabet beads, split rings, and leather jewelry string. The best part for the kids will be coming up with a great phrase or message to give to dad!
  1. Map coasters: Does the man in your life travel a lot? Have you taken some amazing trips together? A great way to remind him of these adventures is to create these map coasters. It’s also an excellent use for old maps you may have lying around or could find in a thrift store.
  1. Paint chip phone case: Like most people, dads don’t go anywhere without their cell phones. However, some dads have cell phone cases that have seen better days. You can create a unique case for dad by jazzing up a clear one with his favourite colours using paint chips. You can find them for free at a hardware store, which makes this a very affordable project.
